As a newly pregnant mama-to-be, with a baby on the way there is a lot to prepare for. There's the nursery to set up, the baby essentials to buy, the hospital visit and the postpartum survival kits. You will need baby clothes for several months, diapers to get you through for a while, burp clothes, bibs, cribs, cradles, bassinets, swings, slings, carriers and strollers. Buying an entirely new wardrobe for yourself might seem daunting task to add to the list. But, you don't have to break the bank or spend a ton on maternity clothes to have a versatile wardrobe to last throughout your pregnancy. All you need are some key and essential pieces and you can extend the length of some of your regular clothes, look put together in a pinch, as well as feel comfy and covered, 'cause that belly is gonna expand.
Leggings, leggings and more leggings. If you really want to forgo purchasing maternity jeans, you can get away with it, if you invest in some great maternity leggings. H&M has two packs at a great price point. Stock up and wear them with a long tank top, a belly band and a comfy long cardigan or sweater and you are set.
Tanks and Tees. Basic essential pieces like camis, tees and tanks are a great maternity wardrobe staple to buy in abundance. You can wear them with your PJ pants, joggers or leggings and layer them under cardigans, over sized sweaters or even a nice blazer, for a put together work look. Get a bunch of tanks and tees a variety of different colours because you will wear them out. Old navy, H&M and even amazon have multi-packs available at affordable prices. Check them out.
Bras and underwear. You are going to gain a few cup sizes during pregnancy so invest in some larger and comfier bras and some full bottom undies. Having comfy garments is going to make a big difference during pregnancy. You are going to be uncomfortable enough in many other areas and places, you don't need a wedgie, too or your bra digging into your back.
If you don't want to replace all your under garments you can purchase some bra extenders online for a very cost effective price. They will help your bras support you as your breasts get bigger and ready for baby's arrival. At some point though, it is wise to invest in some nursing bras in a comfortable, style and fit.
Belly Bands. These belly bands are going to help you extend the wearing life of your regular fitting pants and jeans. You can wear them underneath your pants and not have to worry about the fact that your jeans are not quite done up. You can wear them under tanks and farther down your hips so they cover your bum a bit more when you are wearing leggings. They are definitely worth the investment and a great layering pieces for your maternity wardrobe.
Blouses and dresses. A few classic pieces for work or for dressier occasions are needed at some point in your pregnancy journey. You do not need a lot of these pieces, though so don't run out and buy a bunch of nice dresses thinking you'll need them at some point because you may not. Only purchase a few really versatile dressy pieces. For my maternity wardrobe I went with two classically styles white button ups to wear under blazers for work and a couple of nice dresses in various silhouettes to wear for a more put together look for dinner parties and special holidays or occasions.
Sweaters and joggers. You will also need comfy lounge wear. Invest in some comfy sweaters, jogging and pyjama pants. They are great for those days when you are in the mood to do a lot of nothing but binge watch Bridgerton while you eat pickles from the jar.
Comfy Footwear. It is going to be very difficult to put shoes on when you are six+ months pregnant. If you are pregnant in the winter months get yourself some cozy slip on boots, Ugg style shearling boots are great for this, as well as Manitoba Mukluks and moccasins. If you are pregnant in the warmer months, flip flops and slip on shoes and sneakers are a must. Either way, cold or warm, be sure to get shoes, boots and sandals with plenty of room to expand. Your feet are going to swell during pregnancy and your shoe size will increase so invest in some very comfy foot wear. You'll be grateful you did farther down the pregnancy line.
Coats and Outdoor Wear. If you are pregnant during colder or cooler months you will need some coats that fits your belly. Invest in coats that will allow for you to expand in but won't break the bank. Long puffy coats are not only on trend but great for expanding bellies. They are also light weight and can get you through fall, winter with additional layering and into spring. You can buy a full on maternity coat, but to save some coins, purchase a coat that is just in a much larger size such a 1X or 2X, depending on your size. You can sell the coat afterwards, when you don't need it, anymore and it won't be as niche-y with it being a maternity coat.
